Jimmy Webb's song written for Glen Campbell in 1969. Susan pays homage to the city for all of its trials in recent history and to one of her favorite song-writers, with a stripped-down acoustic version of this classic.
The Huffington Post wrote of this track, "The cover of Jimmy Webb's, "Galveston" is an understated triumph. Hurricane Ike devastated Galveston Texas on September 12, 2008 when Lighthouse was in the planning stages. For a survivor of Katrina, empathy required the inclusion of Web's composition. No extra production was necessary. Cowsill's soul inhabits her voice on this one and she dedicates the effort "To Texas." Simple. Profound. Heart-felt. This song is reborn in Cowsill's capable hands.
Country Chart wrote, "'Galveston' offers a new side of Susan Cowsill that can best be described as a blend of the finest music of Amy Grant and Shaun Colvin."
lyrics
Galveston, oh Galveston
I still hear your sea winds blowin’
I still see her dark eyes glowin’
She was twenty one when I left Galveston
Galveston, oh Galveston
I still hear your sea waves crashin’
While I watch the cannons flashing
I clean my gun and I dream of Galveston
I still see her standing by the water
Standing there looking out to sea
And is she waiting there for me
On the beach where we used to run
Galveston, oh Galveston
I am so afraid of dying
Before I wipe the tears she’s crying
Before I watch your seabird flying in the sun
At Galveston
At Galveston
John Drumbo French from Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band worked with Thompson on two albums along with Fred Frith and Henry Kaiser.
Those two French, Frith, Kaiser and Thompson albums led me to this.
Also, Richard Thompson taught Hugh Cornwell (of The Stranglers) how to play the bass guitar in a band when they were both at the same school (Emil and The Detectives?).
With a career spanning 50 years and playing with two of my heroes (French and Cornwell) Thompson has produced a fascinating EP. yellowcakeuf6
